Fishing for Brook Trout

Brook Trout, New York State’s official state fish, can now be found in Seneca County. This native fish to NY was once abundant, but has declined over the years due to habitat loss and competing fish species. DEC, researchers from Cornell University, and Trout Unlimited are working to preserve heritage strains of the fish and restore them, which includes stocking them. The DEC website has a good article entitled, “The Trout of New York”, where you can learn about the different trout species. Though these fish can weigh over five pounds, they are usually on the smaller side. Their pink flesh is delicious and they are fun to catch.
